  • Ask whether now works

Start by asking if the other person wants to talk. Agree on a manageable amount of time if that helps. A check-in should not become a demand for immediate answers, passwords or private information.

  • Use a specific, open prompt

Try asking what has felt easy recently or what practical arrangement you would like to discuss. Speak about your own experience rather than claiming to know the other person's motives. Listen to the answer without turning the prompt into a test.

  • End with a clear choice

You can agree on a small practical step, return to the topic later or leave it there. Both people can pass on a question. These prompts are not a treatment for abuse or coercion, and nobody is required to stay in an unsafe conversation.
